Kirobo was launched from Japan's Tanegashima Space Centre on August 4 and docked with the International Space Station six days later.

The diminutive android has now sent back its first video message to Earth.

"On August 21, 2013, a robot took one small step toward a brighter future for all," Kirobo said as he floated weightlessly around the cabin.
