If all goes to plan, next year's elections in East Timor should mark a big step forward in the nation's post-independence development.
For more than a decade Australian troops have been at the centre of a foreign military presence to guarantee East Timor's security.
However, by the end of next year the 400 australian soldiers should be on their way home.
With East Timor stable and growing, it's hoped they won't have to return.
